Technically this is half a school year in review but you get what I'm going for. When I started at my two schools in December I was nervous but eager, hopeful but patient, realistic but passionate. I've heard a lot of "You're so enthusiastic/positive, please don't lose this in this field". To keep up this good mindset and just in the heart of reflection I'm going to keep up the trend of reviewing my year with a series of questions and responses. (Teacher friends don't hold back on your own in the comments below!)

2017 | 2018 School Year in Review

  • My students know me as... Miss S/Shryock but also have heard Mrs. Shyrock, Ms. C, Ms. Schorsch (An old art teacher, names are hard! 😂)
  • First day scary was... coming up with projects the day of the day before break, all I kept thinking was "will they even want to do this?!"
  • Funniest thing a student has said (that I can recall)... "Miss S talks country!!!"
  • Classroom creativity... using rice for maracas and aluminium cans for 2D crazy characters. Both were reward projects for first grade!
  • Favorite project... pop art desserts... the students got SO into them and we had everything from donuts to Takis!
  • A breakthrough moment... reading artist statements from students who don't normally love art articulate their creative process and their strength to persevere!
  • A project I want to try again is... mixed media habitats dioramas.
  • The end of the year Art Party... could've been better but was successful for it's first year. Doswell's winners were a 3rd grade class and 2nd grade. We did edible art (cupcake decoration) and create your own slime while William Paca's winners (a 3rd grade and 1st grade class) did edible art with cookies where we drew our before and after decorating. Next year I'm thinking a school wide winner and a theme + physical invites.
  • Biggest accomplishment this school year was... putting together two school wide art shows within two weeks of each other! The first ever for both of these schools and we even got the teachers involved!
  • Something I want to focus on next year... standards, lesson plans, and bringing in 3D art to my students
  • Thing I will miss from this year is... my kids and staff at Doswell E. Brooks!
  • Thing I am most excited for in the fall is... being full time at William Paca and getting to know both my staff and students better, of course MORE ART SHOWS
